Justin Roethlingshoefer:

What I defined a performance as, and this is why I've come back and created this different definition is it's the capacity and desire to intentionally and consistently behave at a level equal to your mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, because I

Jim Johnson:

find that just being there and doing that kind of lets my mind slow down a little bit. It lets me get focused on, cause I'll, I'll combine things. And is that okay? Like, in your world, is that okay to combine some things to say, Hey, I'm doing this grounding thing, but I'm also working on breath work and meditation at the same time.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

100%. It's called habit stacking. And I love it. I think it's key when it comes to efficiency and, um, and everything else, but we've got this middle area. We're 90 percent of people live and it's disease free, but symptom full,

Jim Johnson:

and

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

we accept that as normal. That's what it takes to be a businessman. That's what it takes to be an entrepreneur. That's what it means to be in the sales industry. That's what it means to grind. That's what it means to earn more commissions. That's what 50 looks like. That's what 60 looks like. That's what being a father looks like. That's what being a mother looks like. That's what being. Newly married looks like, or that's what getting divorced looks like. There's all the things, but they're all lies because none of those things are

Jim Johnson:

normal. Hi, and welcome to the prosperous human podcast. I'm your host, Jim Johnson, the good life coach. And that's what I'm here to do is to help other people find what truly living the good life looks like this idea of living a prosperous and fulfilled life. You see, 20 years ago, I was an absolute wreck, the most selfish human being and able to achieve what the outside world looked at as success, only to find out that I'd been chasing all the wrong things, that it wasn't some kind of finish line and enjoyment and everything was going to be great. As a matter of fact, I felt very empty, which put me on a journey to find out what true prosperity was. Really look like and through 10 years of research and study, I was able to find what I call the seven elements of a prosperous life and living those elements and being able to put my finger on those elements has helped me to live a life where I don't Feel a whole lot of pain. I get to live in this thing. We like to call the sweet spot here at prosperous human. There's no such thing as true work life balance, but there is a place called the sweet spot. We want to help walk you along on this journey together through this podcast, as we learn more. About the seven elements of a prosperous life, the concept of orbital thinking, which started at all, which radically goes counter to traditional thinking and may open your mind to why you continue to go down the wrong path and end up at a brick wall, stopping you from living this life that you really thought you were going to get to. And finally, The litmus test, this test that says I am either living in the sweet spot or not. We're excited to walk along with you. We're going to have amazing guests. You're going to see me sharing my own journey with you and giving you some insights along the way. So sit back, relax. Take out a pen, take some notes, and we'll see you on the inside, the inside of a good life. And where this all came from is I was having problems in my life, feeling like something was missing, you know, in various parts of my life. And when I was getting low in one of these areas is when I would start to feel that way, anxious, agitated, frustrated, all of those things. And so I started to put into my own life, focus on these things to fill these different batteries in my life. And one of those is one that I'm super passionate about. It's very important to me. And, uh, but I'm not an expert on by any means. Uh, I'm a, I'm a layman at it. And I wanted to get you guys an expert here, somebody that you could hear, uh, talk from an expert level. Uh, the most. Expert person I know in this field. Um, and he's not just one of those guys I randomly went and found. He's actually a friend of mine. I it'll be interesting. We might actually bring that story up, um, here on the podcast today, but he is the founder. And chief performance, I couldn't think of a better person to have on somebody. That's a chief performance offers officer of own it. And so, uh, I'm excited to bring on the show. My guy, Justin, Justin, welcome to the show, man. How are you doing brother?

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

It is so great to be here, Jim.

Jim Johnson:

Yeah, we've gotten to know each other over the past few months. Um, uh, after going to a Maxwell event and me talking about, and this was one of the things, this is the power of seven, right? So relationships and it was one of them. And I was, I was honest with everybody. I said, Hey, um, it's one of the areas where I feel like I'm lacking. I feel like I'm the guy always pouring out and giving into others, uh, all the time in my coaching and doing what I do. But I wasn't getting this, um, ability to have some of that portent. Nobody that was like a real friend I could like sit on the back porch with and, and have a conversation with. And, uh, you stood up and said, I'll be your friend. And I was like, what, I didn't know this guy. And he's like willing to do that. And so I knew there was something special about you that day. Uh, maybe we'll talk more about that as we progress in this podcast. But, um, your world is, is performance, human performance in particular. And it's been a passion for a long time for you. Why don't you bring us up to speed and how you got to where you are with Onet?

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Yeah, no, absolutely. So. When I was 13 years old, uh, my father said to me, I was a hockey player born and raised in Canada and, uh, at 13, really kind of started to separate myself a little bit from everybody else in my age bracket started to play up a little bit, 15, 16 year olds. And I'd gone through this month period where I wasn't. Head and shoulders above anybody else anymore. I started to get a little bit frustrated. And he looked at me, he said, son, talent will get you noticed, but consistency will get you paid. And immediately I was like, man, how do I become the most consistent version of myself? What does this look like? And. That was really the day that my obsession of the human body and how this thing worked, mind, body, spirit, all intertwined together so that you could become this best version of you, this most consistent version of you, this version that could perform as a consequence of everything, of everything else that you were doing on a day to day basis. And so at 14 years old, I started to measure. A heart rate variability. I started to track my heart rate. I started to track how I slept. I started to track pulse oximetry. I started to look at blood work and everything that my doctors had just to understand this thing even better. And that obviously propelled me in my hockey career. Very well, came down to the States on a hockey scholarship, went, um, got a double undergraduate degree in exercise science and nutrition. Then when got my master's degree in exercise physiology. Uh, with a concentration in sports performance. And then I did my postgraduate work in, uh, heart rate variability and sleep studies. And so, um, that then took me into a career managing health, wellness and performance for, um, the best athletes in the world in, uh, both the NCAA, um, and then into the National Hockey League. And it was in, uh, after a decade, uh, of that, um, it was, uh, really just this deep, deep encounter, um, with God that said, Hey, well done serving the audience you want to, uh, but now it's time to serve the audience that I created you for, uh, which is, uh, the entrepreneur, the executive, the business leader, the person who feels like they have to trade their mission. For their health, that whatever it is they're after, whatever it is that they're going for this life that they are living is just starting to take its toll on them and leave their bodies empty. And I'm here to ultimately tell you that, no, you can actually live a life by design. You don't have to live a life by default. You can go from a state of knowing what to do to a state of understanding what to do so that you can not only be convinced of what you need to do, but truly convicted at the core, um, as to how do we live this life in an elevated way.

Jim Johnson:

Yes. So, so many of our clients, you, you really hit on something there. Uh, this, this thing that we, we believe to be sacrifice, like we, we actually sacrifice like our physical wellbeing and performance. For this business, this entrepreneurial thing that we're chasing, you start working longer hours. We get up earlier to get more done before we can get bothered. We work late at night getting paperwork done that didn't get done because we were in the day to day operation and you begin to sacrifice, um, your, your physical health. Like you, you start to get sick more often. You're tired more often. You have brain fog. You're like, You, you're actually becoming counterproductive because of the amount of productivity you're trying to put in your life. Now, you see that quite a bit in the people that you work with

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

all the time, it's, it's what the world tells us, right? And so I'll, I'll kind of take a step backwards. And the way that I really start to describe this is mental, physical, spiritual, emotionally, but your body doesn't know the difference between these forms of stress. So you could. Have a really hard workout. You could be in a fight with your spouse. You could be worried about Your like am I actually doing what I'm supposed to be doing? I've got this this burning desire I'm almost pregnant with a vision of what I want to to birth, but I don't know how to get it out and You could have your kids that just went off to college. All of these are different forms of stressors Mental, physical, spiritual, emotional. Some are real, some are perceived. Some are positive stressors and some are negative stressors. Our bodies don't know the difference between these, it just knows how to react and it just knows that I have to keep you alive. And so the body's reaction is inflammation. Acetylcholine, cortisol, adrenaline, norepinephrine, those are the shots that it's giving you constantly. Because it's like, Oh my gosh, Jim's under attack. We have to be able to keep them alive. We have to keep them aware. We have to keep them going because we have this primitive brain that still lives inside of us that goes, it's, it's not the workout Jim's just done. It's not this idea that Jim wants to birth. He's actually getting chased by a saber tooth tiger. And that's what we're trying to keep them alive from. And so that's the, that's what office that, what honestly continues to keep going. Now, the downside. Is that, and you touched on this and I, and I love that you said this because I want to call language out here is everyone was like, we sacrifice our physical health. Well, it's not just our physical health. We're sacrificing off. Honestly, what ends up happening is the world tells us. Hey, we're sacrificing our physical health. We're sacrificing those six pack abs. We're sacrificing the leanness. We're sacrificing the sleep where we have to go and diet all the time. We have to go and work out harder. We have to go and run a marathon and get in a race. That's what's going to create the change. But in fact, when we do that, when we focus only on the physical, we ultimately create. this poisoning of the heart, the poisoning of our emotional state. So we start to have fears. We start to have doubts. We start to have these anxieties that maybe we never had before, which then poisons our mind. And we start to think, man, I'm not good enough. I'm not consistent enough. Why can't I do this? Why aren't I good enough? Why? What's wrong with me? Which then separates us from what we were called to do in the first place. And so when we focus only on the physical side of things, it disintegrates the rest of our health and we never actually get to where we want to go. Even though we may get the six pack abs, even though we may lose the weight we want, even though we may run the marathon that we've set out to, we finished, we crossed the finish line and we're empty. But here's the thing. Health doesn't have a finish line. The goal is to stay healthy. The goal is for longevity. The goal is for sustainability. And so what we have to do is we have to flip the world's model on its head and we have to connect spiritually first. Okay. What is it that I'm being called to? What is it that I've been created for? What is this thing that I want to be alive for? Once we have that, once we know whose we are, not who we are, but whose we are and what we said, our identity, and that immediately Renews the mind. I am good enough. I am created for this. I am strong enough. I am exactly where I need to be. I am patient. Which ultimately gives us courage, motivation, and clarity to step in powerfully to those physical habits and behaviors that need to create change. And it's not just working out in nutrition, it's sleep, it's environment, it's relationships, it's immune function. It's your morning routines. It's your night routines. It's your day to day. How are you living and how are you stewarding this thing so that you can increase your capacity to do more. And ultimately fulfill every desire that it is. That's been placed on your heart.

Jim Johnson:

That's really good. Like, Hey, Mike drop, let's just walk away and be done for today. Like that was, that was fantastic because you're so right. Like it does start with the heart. The heart part is where it all starts. Like, uh, first off of my up for all this, because we're always telling ourselves, the world is all telling us we're failures. We're not going to make it. We're, you know, we're not going to live up to expectations. And I'm not worried about the world's expectations of me. Um, that was one of the most freeing moments of my life was when I quit worrying about what everybody else thought of me. Because it wasn't, it wasn't anything that fed me or gave me fulfillment.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

I'll tell you these two stories. So these two, I think this will bring a lot of context because As you can imagine in my world, um, being a hockey player, physical fitness and performance was always my, what I tied my identity to, Hey, you play well. You go from a minor hockey league player to junior, you play well and you get scouted. You get recruited, you go to college, you play well, you get scouted, you get drafted, you play well, you get scouted. You go play pro, like this is the, you, you, you are rewarded for playing well. So you have a, you, you yield this. performance heart and your identity is tapped into that. Well, all of a sudden when I stopped playing hockey and I went into more of the performance coaching realm, the same thing happened while I was like, man, I have to now be the fit guy. I have to be like, I have to look the part. I have to stay in this. I have to compete at something. So I went into CrossFit. I went into, um, all of these different hybrid athlete, um. Competitions went and ran races all the time. And I started to notice that I would get massive anxiety stepping up to the start line and like, not nerves, like when I was starting doing this, but like literal anxiety and. I'd gotten pretty good. Um, I was at the world championships, um, for the high rocks games and top hundred athletes in the world. And we're standing at the start line and my anxiety got so bad that I actually walked to the back. I wasn't going to start. I was like, I can't run. Like I can't even go. And I was like, again, playing back in my mind. No, you're a wuss. Like, what's the matter with you? Like, like, like, what are you doing? Like you've trained for this. What is everybody going to think? Like, who are you? And all of these things started going in my mind and I looked down at my heart rate monitor. My heart rate monitor had me at 155. I wasn't doing anything. And I walked back to the start line and I go and I run, I run the race and as I finish, I'm like, I'm done. I'm never doing this again. Like I can't, I can't take this. Like it's, it's just, it's eating me up inside. Like it's, it's literally killing me. You'd look at this guy, you'd look at me and you physically fit, looks great. World champion. Um, Type status in some, in, in certain things, like that's what you want to look like. But I was just, I was broken and I was unhealthy mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The only thing I had was some physical health. That at that point doesn't mean anything fast forward about two and a half months. And And this is where I really start to butt heads with some of these influencers. And there was this one influencer specifically, he runs a lot. He was an ex Navy seal. And he's like, if you're not able to run every single day and just get out there and go and go until you can't go anymore and push through that wall, you can't stay hard and he's just, and he's coming off and coming off and coming off. And I'm like, man, maybe like I haven't ran in a long time. Maybe like, maybe I'm losing the edge. Maybe I don't have what it takes. Maybe. Who am I to be speaking into other people's lives? Like, man, maybe I just got to do something. So I, I picked up my phone right there on the, on the spot. And I said, for the next 30 days, or pardon me for the next three months, so 90 days, I'm going to run two miles a day, 30 days by three 90 full days, 180 miles, two miles a day, no matter what I'm doing, where I am and. Without having any type of connection to it, it's just like, we're going to go do this. There's no purpose other than it's another challenge that I'm trying to find my worth for myself with it. And I get through the first 30 days, I get through the next 30 days, I get through the next 29 days, I'm on the last day, the last day I go back out to this path out into Miami where it's a two mile loop that I run. And I went out and I got the same exact anxiety feeling that I had during the start of that race. And I was like, what is, where is this coming from? Like, what is happening? And I took off, I started running, ran a mile, ran 1. 5 on my way back. I literally get this word in my head, like, nobody cares. Nobody cares if you finish. Nobody cares, like, that you did 90 days straight of two miles. Nobody cares that you did this. Who are you doing this for? And I started to sob. Like, literally sob. I sat down on the curb, 200, 250 meters from, um, from finishing. And I heard Again, your win is not finishing and I sat there and I didn't finish. I called an Uber, Uber drove me 250 meters, so I officially did not run the end finish. And it came back to the point of being able to give up that physical component because the physical component is what you have the identity and is what the world tells you you need to do. You need to lose the weight. You need to exercise. You need to have the nutrient that you need to go on this X diet. Like. These are all vehicles and avenues, which we'll talk about in a second of what we call our eight foundational principles of true health or life by design, but they're not the things that you have to set your foundation. on. It's not who you are. It's about how are you preparing yourself for what it is that you've been called to and health is holistic in these four domains, mental, physical, spiritual, emotional. And just like if you have a healthy bowl of fruit, if you put a rotten piece of fruit in the middle, It's only within 24 hours that the rest of the bowl starts to rot, and it's just like our health. Our health is the exact same way, and we have to get our order correct. Spiritual connection first creates renewal of the mind, creates freedom of the heart, creates sustainability and discipline of the body. And if we do it in any other order, We're always going to be chasing. We're always going to have a disintegration of our health. We're always going to feel on whole and we won't know why.

Jim Johnson:

So that was one of my biggest challenges. I'm interested in this eight foundational principles because this stuff, my whole thing is this power of seven, right? So maybe there's one there that I'm missing, or maybe I'm interested to see what those are. Um, and I struggled with how I was going to do this particular podcast. Was I going to start with. Where I think it all starts or would I finish with where it starts and I've kind of gone back and forth because I, I'm going to record these individually and then I'm going to put them in order and, um, the spiritual growth and developments number one for me, like I don't have that one. Um, the rest of them kind of fall apart all on their own, the, and it was very intentional. You talked about words being important things. It doesn't say physical fitness on mine, physical wellbeing, and that's a big difference for me.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Yeah.

Jim Johnson:

Um, and it doesn't say high performance, it just says performance. It's physical wellbeing and performance and they are directly related to the other six things. Um, you know, in a very, um, ordered format, which, uh, I, I, I agree with your order 100%. I don't, I don't have any disagreement with that at all. You said something, um, uh, earlier, it's not knowing who you are, but whose you are. Where does that come from?

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Yeah, I love that. So I've got a, obviously a deep man of faith. I call myself a kingdom man. And um, at the end of the day, God's got a calling on all of our lives. And when You succumb to that, that your identity put in anything other than what God's called you to is going to be left empty, unfulfilling, frustrating, I call it like a spiritual discontent. People might be able to relate to that, a spiritual confusion. And so until you're able to truly You might believe in God, but you don't belong to him, meaning that you haven't fully surrendered to him. You haven't just given up to what it is that he's called you to. And there's a verse that I really like run every, our entire business off, um, in terms of what we were operating. And it's Romans, um, 12, one and two. Uh, therefore, brothers and sisters, I urge you in the view of God's mercy to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship to not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed with renewing of your mind. Then you'll be able to approve what God's will is. And so. You hear all that and it's like, okay, cool.

Jim Johnson:

No, one of my favorite verses, like serious top five.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

But for me, there's seven words in there that are powerful. And this, and this transfer, this transforms everything for me. This is your true and proper worship. Because it's not going to church on Sunday. It's not sitting and reading the Bible every single morning. It's not going in the cold plunge because you're developing your mind. It's not going for that run, it's everything together. It's how are you living? It's a firm foundational question of how are you living? And when you ask that question, how are you living? Am I living and am I stewarding this thing? Well, the only difference is if you're not stewarding it, well, you don't truly understand whose you are, but the moment you understand whose you are, you're like, man, I don't own this. I don't own any idea I have. I don't own any business I have. I don't own this, this able moving body that I have. Man, I better look after it. I better steward it. I better prepare it so that I can realize what's already prepared for me. And so those are really kind of these foundational, like biblical principles that I call truth that Really just convict me in being able to be so bold in my statements about health, wellness and performance because at the end of the day, if you don't yield and steward this thing well, man, nothing else matters. It truly doesn't matter whatsoever. And I see so often in, um, our worldly culture, people talking about discipline, but nobody ever tells you why discipline is important. Nobody ever tells, if people talk about patience, but nobody ever talks about why patience is important. People always tell, talk to you about doing the hard things or doing the things that make you uncomfortable, but nobody ever tells you why they're important. Well, I'll tell you why all three of them are important because you don't own your body. You don't own your mind. You don't own this thing you're in. You're simply borrowing it and you are a steward and a steward is here to manage. And so when you can manage it, In an effective way, not for what you want now, but what for you, for what you've been called to, that's where discipline comes in. Discipline takes discipline is required to ultimately exude a calling. Patience is required to get you from where you are to where you want to go. And when you can start to have all of these characteristics start to come into place, when you realize, Hey, this isn't my thing. This isn't what I know. I want to do. I know. I want to eat this right now because it tastes good, but it's not going to get me to where I want to go. Hey, I know I want to stay up and send 15 more emails or watch this last show or, um, Uh,

Jim Johnson:

catch the end of the Packers game,

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

whatever it might be, but you know, you're not going to be at your best for what it is that you've been called to the next day. So how do you start to routine and build your life by design rather than by default? And the life by design to me is different. A life by design to me is uncommon. A life by by design to me is intentional. And I want to come back to like one of the definitions I asked or one of the questions I ask, um, every audience all the time. I've asked this to probably 50, 000 people by now. But if I was to ask you, Jim, what would be, what would you say is your definition of performance when you hear performance? What is your definition?

Jim Johnson:

Are you asking me?

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Yeah, because I think, I think this might also, and even audience listeners, as you're listening to this, I'm asking you to like, even before Jim answers, hopefully you've got like a couple words in your mind when you hear performance, what pops up?

Jim Johnson:

The biggest word for me is capacity. Great. I have, I have the capacity. To do what I have been called to do as well as I can possibly do it in an effort to serve others. That's me.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

So good. It's, it's great. I, I've, I've, I think I've, I've maybe heard that answer once in the 50, 000 people often I hear winning outcomes, results, attaining a goal, efficiency, championships. That's what I hear when people, when I say, what's the definition of performance? And so

Jim Johnson:

when I'm called to be on stage, I perform to the best of my capability. And I don't mean like on a stage. I mean, just when I'm called

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

anywhere, right? And so what I defined a performance as, and this is why I've come back and created this. Different definition is it's the capacity and desire to intentionally and consistently behave at a level equal to your mental, physical, spiritual, emotional potential, because we know how is holistic. And so when we break that down, we go, okay, capacity and desire. Everybody has the desire. Everybody has the desire to have the business. Everybody has the desire to have the platform. Everybody has the desire to have the life. Everybody has the desire to have the energy. But what they lack is the capacity. And the reason they lack the capacity is because of how they're living. You haven't been living intentionally and you haven't been living consistently. So because you haven't been behaving intentionally and consistently, there's this gap between your reality and your potential. And so what we have to do is we have to live intentionally and consistently to close this gap so that ultimately what your potential is is equal to that of what your reality is. And the only way we get there is by changing habits and behaviors through a system. And what I mean by a system is we don't rise to the level of our goals, we don't, we want to lose weight. Okay, great. Awesome. Show me your systems in your life. I guarantee you, your systems have been set up by default and thus have gotten you an outcome that is not what you want. Getting an outcome is inevitable. We will all have outcomes in our life. We have, we'll all have outcomes in our life, but not all those outcomes are what we want. However, if you act intentionally and consistently, your outcomes are inevitable. You want to lose 50 pounds. It's very simple as to how to do it, but you're going to have to act intentionally and consistently over time. You want to gain 50 pounds? Very easy. You're going to have to act and behave consistently and intentionally over the course of time. The outcome is inevitable. You want to build a million dollar business? Act and behave intentionally and consistently over a certain amount of time. The outcome is inevitable.

Jim Johnson:

That's the amount of time that's the problem,

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

but here's the, but here's why it matters. The order, because if you were called to do that, if you're connected spiritually, you're going to have the staying power to be able to do that. But what happens is if we only focus on the physical behavior component of it, that's where time becomes an issue because it's not truly what you were called to do. So you try to shortcut it, you try to white knuckle it, you try to do all these things. So if you sit here and you're like, Justin, I've been trying to lose 50 pounds for, uh, for eight years, but I just can't do it. And I can't keep it off. All you, you, you haven't connected spiritually as to why you're doing it yet. You're just doing it to try to get six packs abs. You're just doing it to try to look better in clothing. You're just doing it because Somebody told you, you should, you were, you've tried to be convinced, not actually convicted because you don't actually know why you're doing it. And so when you can get connected spiritually, you can transform your mind. You can then free your heart and then you create sustainability within the habits and behaviors and your outcome is inevitable. It's only a matter of time. And that's why health, wellness, and performance in our culture is so backwards. We focus on these billboard models. We focus on these influencers on social media. We focus on these, these, these behaviors, the cold plunges, the, the saunas, the, um, the peptides, the hormone therapies, the, the, the, all the quick fixes that are supposed to get you what you want fast. But we're ultimately living in a culture that we've lost our ability to be patient. We've lost our ability to be consistent. We've lost our ability to be intentional about what actually has to happen. And so because of that, we actually know less about ourselves. We know less about this thing that we're living in. We know less about how to steward it and because we don't know how to steward it. We don't get the outcomes we want and then we get confused So when something breaks if you don't know how to use it, you don't know how it operates You don't know what's broken and you don't know how to fix it So you keep grabbing all of the other things that you're at and you just stay in the bottom physical area And that's what I see over and over and over and over again. And that's why we live in a state of confusion. We live in a state of overwhelmed. We live in a state of frustration when it comes to our health, when it comes to our wellness, when it comes to our performance mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally, because we're trying to treat them as siloed things. When you disintegrate your health, your health disintegrates. But when you treat them as one, you become whole. And they integrate together. Well, and so I say all of that to kind of bring us back to, okay, well, Justin, that makes sense. I understand. I need to have habits and behaviors that are aligned with what I'm needing to do. What do I need to focus on? Well, there's eight foundational principles that I talk about. Eight foundational principles that we start to highlight with one key metric called heart rate variability. You heard me talk about that at the very beginning. So what I did all my postgraduate research in heart rate variability at its core. The definition is it's the language for how your body communicates, how your body's adapting to stress and strain. Remember, mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, your body doesn't know the difference. So all of a sudden with one single number, with one single thing, we can start to understand how our body's either building capacity or shrinking in capacity. Based upon the habits, behaviors, and lifestyles that we're engaging in. And so with this number, you can get it through a whoop band. You can do it through your aura ring. You can get it through it. Yeah, it is. Love that. Love that. If you're watching online, he just, um, Jim just literally lifted up his hand and showed his whoop band. Um, you can have it on an aura ring. You can get it on an Apple watch. You can get it on a Fitbit. You can get it on a whoop or a aura ring. You name it. You got it on all of these different wearable devices, but you have to look at. HRV in its raw form. And so if you have a positive trend upwards, it means your body is adapting well to stress. If you have a negative trend downwards, it means your body's not adapting well to stress and you need to create a change in some habits and behaviors. And so what I did was I created a system of eight different levers that you can pull in your life, tied to different habits and behaviors. So those eight areas are exercise and movement. Hydration, nutrition, sleep, immune function, environment, self care, and mindset. And those eight areas that comprise of our health holistically, mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, are then tied to habits. For example, self care, 30 minutes of self care a day. And I define self care as something you only do for yourself. So many people would look at this and go, man, I exercise every single morning. I hydrate really well. I've got a great nutrition routine. I sleep really well at night. But I go all day long and I serve my kids all day long and I serve my business all day long and I serve my spouse all day long and I'm in a room. All day long with artificial, um, lights overhead all day long. Well, yeah, you've got four of the components, sleep, exercise, nutrition, and hydration, but you've forgotten for self care. You don't do anything for yourself. You're stressed all day emotionally and mentally because you're constantly going. You haven't looked at your environment because you're inside all day. You don't see the sun. You don't get your bare feet on the ground. You don't get fresh air. You don't, uh, have any type of awareness as to how are you changing spaces throughout the day. You don't develop your mindset. You spend no time on that. You don't, um, do any breath work. You don't do any meditation. You don't get into the word. You don't do any of these things. And then immune function, you're not getting any sauna time. You're not getting any cold plunge time. You're not being intentional with supplementation. You're not being intentional with. Um, uh, any type of, uh, colds and flus and HRV and looking at these things. So you're just, you're batting 50%. And so if you think you're productive now, you think you're energetic now, imagine what you would be because we look over, I look around at everybody and I'm like, you're operating at. normal, which is 60 percent of where your potential is. And so your reality to your potential, there's this massive gap. And if we were really honest with ourselves, people are living, what I call fake health. There's this fake health continuum on the far left. You've got death and disease. This is where you've got some form of chronic illness. You've got diabetes, you've got, um. Uh, cancer, you've got dementia, you've got, you're, you're being treated for something. Then on the far right side, you've got true health and this might look different for everybody, but it probably looks something like this. You wake up in the morning, you're energetic, you're mentally clear. You get your gym clothes on, you go work out, you come home, you get the kids off to school, you get your to do list done all day, you come home at night, you go to your social gathering, you get the kids to football, soccer, ballet, parent teacher conference, whatever. You maybe connect with your spouse throughout dinner. You maybe go to another social gathering for your business or whatever. You put your head on your pillow, you sleep deep at night, but we've got this middle area where 90 percent of people live and it's disease free, but symptom full

That's what being newly married looks like. Or that's what getting divorced looks like. There's all the things, but they're all lies because none of those things are normal. Those are the things that have been earned. Those are your outcomes. That's your performance based upon your habits and behaviors and the way that you're living.

Jim Johnson:

That's so good. And it's, it's so much in line, like I seriously, as I was listening to your eight, I'm looking at my seven over here and I'm going, man, there's so much tied to those two things. Um, one of mine is mental genius and creativity. I look at that as this, a combination of mindset and self care this time where I can spend time on me. Um, I tend to, I tend to like the grounding thing to be honest with you. That's one of my favorite things to do literally because it's easy. Number one, to be honest, I can sit outside in my chair or I can lay down if I want to. On the ground. I actually have a, um, a mat that creates it. Um, if I can't get outside because I find that just being there and doing that kind of lets my mind slow down a little bit. It lets me get focused on, because I'll, I'll combine things. And is that okay? Like in your world, is that okay to combine some things to say, Hey, I'm doing this grounding thing, but I'm also working on breath work and meditation at the same time?

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

100 percent it's called habit stacking and I love it. I think it's key when it comes to efficiency and um, and everything else The way a lot of what we do when we start actually working with people and coaching people is Not only do we help them build their life by design like it's You're not going to do the same thing Justin does or the same thing jim does or the same thing kelsey does you're going to be something very different something very unique As uniquely as you were built in this uniquely as you were designed and used as uniquely as the season of life that you're in. But on top of that, we're going to do all of your testing. So we're going to understand what your cellular deficiencies are. We're going to understand what your DNA and epigenetics say. We're going to understand what your hormone balance and irregularities look like. We're going to understand heart rate variability and your different biometrics from your wearable device so that we can again start to mold shift and attack them where it matters for you the most. So if you're going to go and Do your PEMF mat that, um, is basically your grounding map for what you just spoke about. That's going to create more alkalinity in your body. Maybe it's a red light that would be more beneficial for you in this season of where you're at and what we're trying to heal from rather than. Um, in other, uh, modality. But if we did red light with your, um, PMF mat with five minutes of breath work and five minutes of meditation, boom, in a matter of 15 minutes, you've got four or five different modalities that have been done and completed. You then go and sit in the sauna. For 10 minutes and do a three minute cold plunge. You've got eight different modalities done in less than 25 minutes. And all of a sudden you've got this protocol that's healing you, creating this newfound space because you've been able to connect spiritually. You've been able to heal yourself mentally. You've been able to free yourself emotionally. Now your body's ready to go. Now your body's ready to work. Now you're able to start shrinking that space between reality and potential. And that's when energy comes back. That's when mental clarity starts to come back. That's when, um, uh, creativity comes back. That's when you start to feel well, and. What I've heard so often from people and this is just such an it's such a blah word that I almost don't use it to describe How people are feeling but as I've said it more and more people like yeah, yeah, that's what I'm looking for It's amazing to me how many people don't feel well Like they want to feel better like those those two words well and better like Really like that used to the not capacity or potential or energy or, um, high performance. Exactly. Like none of these, it's just, no, I want to feel better and I just don't feel well, okay, well we can do that. Like this, the, the, the reality that you're in. It's not a death sentence and I, I,

Jim Johnson:

I think most people are confused by that, to be honest with you. I think they believe that they have to be this ultimate performer. They have to, you know, like all of these outrageous things that the world has told us, like we got to have a four hour work week and like we got to take action and all this stuff that you hear that are bumper sticker sayings of the world telling us who we should be. When the reality is, um, kind of good enough, we're, we're good enough. And that was so freeing for me. Once I, once I finally like let all that go and I submitted, I'm like, Hey, okay. I am who I am. This is who I am. This is who I was designed to be. I'm going to lean into that and just be that on a daily basis. My byproduct, which would be your outcome, we use some similar terminology. My byproduct has been so much better.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Yeah.

Jim Johnson:

It's been just so much better with, Oh, I have the freedom to stop worrying about all that and what everybody else thinks. And I get to Concentrate and be in, uh, intentional about what I do and do it. Well, it's so freeing. It's like, Oh, okay. Now I'm going to stop worrying about all that stuff.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

I'm going to, I'm going to even add to what you said. And I often say you're perfect. Just as you are, as you said, I'm good enough. You're perfect. Just as you are. But you're just too darn good to stay there.

Jim Johnson:

It's, um, I'm perfect as I am, but there's this thing in my mind telling me I'm not perfect enough.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

But it's what I guess where I was coming at from it coming at it from is if you were just to keep doing what you're doing, you would slowly decay because you're you're You're not stewarding this thing intentionally. We have to do things so intentionally. We were meant to live intentionally. Like that's like God give us this mind, this creative thing that we are the only things on this planet that can create, like, think about that for a second. We are the only ones on this planet that can create. And the only way that we can continue to create. Is if we are, well, is if this thing is operating well, and at the end of the day, that's what matters. So I say you're perfect exactly how you are, how, whatever brought you to this realization, whatever your journey may be, you got diabetes. That's, that's really too bad. You're 80 pounds overweight. That's really too bad. You got diagnosed with cancer. That's really too bad. You, you have, you have some outcome where you've earned your illness. That's really too bad. But guess what? You're perfect. Just the way that you are, but you're too good to stay there. And so we're gonna change the way that you're living. We're gonna change the habits and behaviors that are there, and we are going to heal you. I firmly believe, firmly believe with every ounce of my being that it is never too late to reverse something that has happened because of how you've been living. 96 percent of chronic illnesses. I missed this part kind of in the math component here for everybody talk about how body doesn't know the difference. Mental, physical, spiritual, emotional stress, real perceived positive negative because we're in a state of chronic stress. Chronic stress creates chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation creates chronic, um, symptoms, chronic symptoms that our bodies don't like, but we tell them our normal chronic symptoms. Create chronic illness and chronic illness is the leading cause of death in the United States at 71%, 94% of those illnesses, 94% of those chronic illnesses. are all preventable, preventable through habit, behavior and lifestyle change. And so wherever you are at, whatever you're feeling, if you're not feeling well, if you are not mentally clear, if you are not mentally sharp, if you don't feel creative all the time, if you don't have the energy that you want, if you're not sleeping well, if you eat and you feel bloated, if you've, Eat and you just don't, you feel lethargic. If you, um, wake up in the morning and you're just like heavy and depressed and overwhelmed, these are not normal things, but don't give up hope because it's only because you don't know how to live in the appropriate way. And it's not your fault. Cause the world has just sold you a good, a bill of goods that is untrue. And we can ultimately bring you back to a space that's a life by design that is hope filled that has a life that is different and your outcomes will also be different.

Jim Johnson:

Uh, that's a wrap. Like I, I think like that, that really, man, Justin, so good. All of this was so good. Um, and that's kind of the point of this because I am talking about one component, right? Um, the physical wellbeing and performs, but. I think in every one of these components, as I talk to others, much like you, we're going to find that they all tie together, they all tie together. They're, they're, they're, they're not independent of each other. You can't just be really good at one and then you'll feel lacking at all the others. Um, Man, so just out of curiosity, uh, I wasn't really intending to do this, but I think I should. Um, if you've listened to this, um, and something's provoking it and like, this is one of those podcasts that is sitting there, even me listening, I'm being provoked. There's certain things in my own world I'm going like, I'll be honest, my last two nights of sleep have been absolute awful garbage. They've been the worst I've had in forever. I usually sleep very, very well. So I'm over here looking at, okay, what are the stressors? What is, what's bringing that on? If you are feeling provoked by any of this today, I strongly suggest that you reach out to Justin and his team. And so how do they get ahold of you, Justin?

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Yeah, very simple. Just own it. Coaching. com is a, is our website. You can find anything that you need on there. Um, there's a bunch of free content, a bunch of free resources. We've got a podcast. Uh, we've got. YouTube channel with copious amounts of content. We got a bunch of free PDFs and downloads, but it's all right there on owner coaching. com. And we just really wanted to provide you with everything possible, um, to make sure that you could ultimately take ownership of your health and, uh, ultimately redeem it. Um, but again, if you're, uh, if you're somebody who needs a little bit more accountability, needs that coaching, needs that expert, needs it a little bit of that handholding, uh, wants to get some more testing done, wants to, uh, get into the biometrics a little bit more to, again, understand what's happening in your body a little bit better, rather than just trying different things and putting it together for yourself, we're available there too.

Jim Johnson:

It's really good. I've gotten to know Justin over the past few months, as I alluded to when we first started this. Um, I've learned more and more about what he does and how he does it. Um, he puts everybody else first and in priority. And the thing that really attracted me to what it is that you guys do is the combination of factors, but the supplementation side, most of the coaches that are in your world and do what you do, It's like a mile long list of all the different supplements. And it's like, you need to take seven of those in the morning and one of those at night and this one at this meal and that one at that women, all that stuff. Right. You hear it over and over again. And I've gone down that road myself a couple of times and I get like sick of it. I'm just trying to keep track of when and where and all that other good stuff. One of the things that drives me nuts, like. The, um, pre workout and post workout, that kind of stuff. Okay. Yeah. Everybody's trying to keep up with all that and it's all because there's some great marketing behind it. We do get this, we do get some great marketing. We do get this like initial energy and like, all right, let's go. But it's probably not real healthy with what you guys do. And the blood testing that you do and the DNA testing, you're able to custom design one supplement that somebody has got to take. That's it, right? Correct.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Yeah. And it comes back to what we talked about. What's the definition of performance? The capacity and desire to consistently and intentionally behave at a level equal to your potential. And so, if we can ultimately make your life simpler, if we can do something more intentional, if we can help you be more consistent by designing and tailoring something to exactly what you need, So that you only have to take a supplement once a day while stacking it on top of all these positive behaviors that are again designed based upon the lifestyle you have. Are you a single man? Are you a mother of five? Are you, uh, a, uh, father of three and an entrepreneur? Are you, uh, living in, uh, Texas? Are you living in New York? Like very different lifestyles, very different things going on that we have to take into consideration, which is why. Everything you've tried so far has let you down in one way, shape, or form because it wasn't created for you. It wasn't built for you. It wasn't designed for you. We've been designed uniquely for a reason and so we need to go and seek a solution designed for us for a reason and Yes for the supplementation we'll do We'll take all of your DNA epigenetic and cellular micronutrient testing information we'll literally custom built custom formulated so that there's a single supplement for you and and help to reverse the cellular deficiencies that exist. Once we reverse the cellular deficiencies that exist, your body starts to operate at a higher level. It starts to get more energy. Naturally, it starts to sleep better. Naturally. While you compound all of these positive habit changes together with. The reversal of micronutrient deficiencies. You no longer need the pre workout. You no longer need the energy drinks. You no longer need the things that are just providing little boosts that are band aids and being used no different than any narcotic or pharmaceutical. You ultimately get to change the game because you're now living a life by design, not a life by default.

Jim Johnson:

Yeah. I had a guy tell me one time that, um, he was, uh, he was in recovery. And it had been for a long time, uh, 17 years or something like that. And he said it was harder for him to give up, um, to give up the monster, you know, uh, energy drink than it was to give up drugs. Like that one was more difficult than drugs because of the sugar that was in it. I'm like, wow, that is, that's wild. Um, Justin, thanks for being on today. Uh, I think it was great show. Great information. Um, if I was a listener, I might have been going, Hey, I need to take some notes. Probably one of those ones I would come back to a couple of times. I know I'm going to come back to this and listen to it a few times. Thanks for being on the show, man. And thanks for being a friend.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Oh, that's awesome, Jim. I appreciate you having me on and, um, look forward to, uh, further conversations down the road.

Jim Johnson:

Yeah. And full disclosure. Uh, yeah, I'm hopping on board with own it myself. So, uh, yeah, it's, uh, it, what he does is a good thing. Um, and I, and I believe in it. Like I just believe in living a life by design. Actually something that I've done myself kind of in, um, mixing and matching of pieces, but I'm going to go and get some coaching on it, uh, from somebody that's done it and done it well. I mean, come on, you're working with NHL hockey players. I'm just a coach. So when we maybe one of those people you mentioned, I'm an old, merry guy that has a coaching business.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

I'm going to tell you, I'm going to tell you though, it's, it was during that time working with those players in the league, doing all this stuff that I realized the solution or this problem we were solving wasn't an athlete problem, it was a human problem.

Jim Johnson:

It is so much. I said, I feel like I could sit here and talk to you for the next two or three hours. Um, but I know your time is valuable. I want to let you go. Thanks for being here. Uh, own it coaching. com, right? You got it. All right, brother. Hey, thanks for being on the show.

Justin Roethlingshoefer:

Appreciate you.

Jim Johnson:

Wow, man. That was a good one. Uh, and I knew it would be, I had no doubt that Justin was going to bring the heat today. And, uh, he did. It's, uh, there's so much to it. But it's really simple at the same time. It's simple things, hard work. Uh, and so many of us shy away from hard work. Uh, I think the more we lean into it. The more that we look at it with joy, the more that we go, I need to change some habits in my life. I need to do so joyfully. Um, the more that we become better for our community, our relationships, those we serve, those who work for us. And maybe the one we do serve. So, um, come back to this podcast. Thank you for hanging out today. Thank you for following us. Uh, download the episodes, share them with friends. Uh, this is one of those ones that's not just strictly for contractors. Be willing to share this with friends and family that they feel like they're living a life that has been told to them by the world. But it's the life they should lead say, Hey, maybe you want to listen to this podcast. I think it's that valuable. Thanks for being here this week, and we'll see you on our next episode.
